Turkey is located on the Mediterranean, in the Anatolian region of West Asia, with a small section in Mediterranean Europe separated by the Turkish Straits (Bosphorus, Sea of Marmara, and Dardanelles).
The Black Sea is to the north, the Aegean Sea in the west and Mediterranean Sea to the south west, Turkey is surrounded by Bulgaria and Greece to the west, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia to the north east, Syria, Iraq and Iran to the south east.
Although most of the country lies geographically in Western Asia, it is considered to be a European country and is currently in accession negotiations for membership of the European Union, being an official candidate since 2005.
